Repost or Christmas and New Years: Remember that not too long ago this is what passenger air travel looked like. Remember that there is weather. Remember that there may be a delayed passenger that they are holding the plane for who just wants to see their kids. Remember that the crew is away from home too. Remember that everyone at the airport is working so you are able to get where you are going. Remember to be kind, have fun and laugh a bit if it doesn’t go 100% perfect.

Untill recently I’ve only flew twice in my life, from Amsterdam to London and back when I was 14.

Recently I’ve been flying once or twice a month to my girlfriend in Frankfurt. While it’s just a one hour trip it amazes me every single time. I cannot comprehend how people take it for granted that you can sit in a (fairly) comfortable chair and be lifted up into the skies, looking down on the land, people and cities and going the fastest you will ever go, in near complete safety. The closest you’ll likely ever get to be to space.
The fact that airtravel is mundane will never cease to amaze me. It might just be me growing up poor or that I’m a giant space nerd but damn I enjoy every moment of it.

A few years ago I was on a flight landing in Dublin, and I was (stupidly) pressed against the window and looking out as we landed in some string crosswinds. Naturally, we blew some tires and I smacked my forehead pretty good. There were a few people complaining about the rough landing, but most people started clapping after we landed. I can’t understand people that complain about a pilot wrestling a massive metal tube down through shit weather and landing safely despite blowing multiple tires.....It’s nice that most people seem to understand better, at least on that flight.

People clapped on landing on a recent flight I was on. Haven’t heard that since post-9/11 panic time. I think people were encouraged to do it as it was in the safety video as well (this was a TAP flight). Nothing especially challenging about the landing.

This logic applies to all life. In your car, in the store, out at dinner.... We are all humans trying to get through life. Have patients and show kindness to those around you and watch how much happier you are and how much more pleasant life is. Life is too short to spend time being pissed about things outside of your control.

Let me tell you the story of the most relaxing day of flying I’ve ever had.

I was in Tampa for my friend’s wedding. I had a fairly early morning flight the day after, I think 8:30. Set my alarm for 6:15. Woke up, in my hotel, mind, at 7:37. Launched out of bed, grabbed my bags, checked out, drove to the airport, dropped off the rental car, cleared security, and was running for my gate as I heard them announce final boarding. Got there just as they were about to close the door. Get on the plane, relieved and shocked that I didn’t blow it. I sink down into my seat and wait for pushback.

Ten minutes pass, pushback doesn’t come. Another ten, still not moving. The flight deck announces there’s a mechanical issue with the plane and they’re working on a soution. The cabin groans and mutters angrily. I shrug and read my book (didn’t have any real deadline for getting home, so didn’t care). Maintenance boards the plane, we sit there for another 20 minutes or so. Finally the captain announces that, because they don’t feel confident about flying with the issue they’re scrubbing the flight. We have to deplane and have customer service give us new flights. The cabin sounds like it’s ready to mutiny.

We begin the de-planeing process and the captain is standing by the exit as we walk by, like they often do after a completed flight. This not being a completed flight I could see and hear a number of the passengers ahead of me giving him flak as they pass by. When I get to him I tell him I understand, I know it’s a tough, thankless decision, and I appreciate him and what he does. He brightened up, thanked me, and gave me a fist bump.

Off the plane, and having been given my “sorry for the inconvenience” airport voucher, I looked for the customer service desk. The line, unsurprisingly, is massive. Since I’m not in a particular hurry (and I just have my carry on to worry about, no check bags), I decide to go get an early lunch and wait for the line to abate.

After a relaxing lunch at a very nice restaurant (and a bit of dicking around on the wi-fi), I finally go to customer service. At this point a good two hours have passed. The rep asks where I’d been all this time. I just shrugged. There’s only one flight option left that would get me home same day, it wouldn’t leave for another two hours, and it would have a 2+ hour layover at DTW. Fine by me, more time to explore. I checked out the shops in TPA, then found the best place to watch arrivals and departures and hung out there for a bit. Finally boarded the plane to DTW. Landed, rode the monorail for a couple laps just because, had dinner, watched some TV, and finally, about 12 hours after I started, got on my final flight home to BDL. With no concerns about baggage to go missing or having to get home by a certain time there was no real reason for stress, and the events of the trip made it interesting and memorable.

Enjoy the trip. Get there early. Be extra friendly to the crew.
